Emerging Maker-in-Residence: Kassie Woodworth

By: Kassie Woodworth

I have been the Emerging Maker-in-Residence at Ignite studios for the past 5 weeks. Within this time I have been diligently working to develop ideas that I’ve put on the back-burner. I graduated this spring from Herron School of Art and Design, and since then I have created a whole new body of work.

This residency has allowed me to reflect upon that body of work and develop new (and old) ideas. Being an emerging artist, I have to constantly improve my work. Artists are always making new work and attempting to understand the art that they are making to be able to communicate the idea. I may still have a part-time job but in reality, I have a full-time, 24/7 job of being an artist. I’m either physically making art or thinking about it: how to improve my practice, what I need to add to my to do list, coming up with new ideas or concepts.

Ignite Studio has allowed me to designate a significant amount of time to my practice for the summer. Being right out of school, I needed a place to work and materials to work with; this has been the perfect solution. As I go into my last week of the residency, all I can wish for is a (semi) permanent studio space similar to what I have been so fortunate to have at Ignite Studio. For now, my basement will have to do.

I will have open studio on Saturday, July 27th from 1-5pm. I will be finishing up some projects I have started but feel free to come in and chat! It is Ignite Studio’s one year anniversary so there will be other activities to enjoy as well.
